Wawira Njiru, a social entrepreneur and founder of the Food4Education organization, has been introduced as the winner of the Germany Africa Award this year. This award is given in honor of her efforts to provide food for children in Kenya. Njiru started with a simple fundraising initiative for 25 children and now feeds 600,000 children daily with 6,000 employees.
Path to Success
At the age of 21, Njiru aspired to feed 100 children daily. After studying nutrition in Adelaide, Australia, she returned to Kenya and began her activities, understanding the importance of food for children's education and health. She states, "I knew that many children in my country needed education and food plays a key role in this regard."

Operational Model and Its Impacts
The Food4Education organization now serves 19,000 schools across Kenya, providing over 600,000 meals daily. This system is funded through donations, government assistance, and parent participation, who only cover a small portion of the costs. Njiru emphasizes that 80 percent of the food distributed in this program is sourced from local farmers, helping to provide fresh food and create a sustainable market for farmers.
Njiru notes the changing attitudes towards food in schools, saying, "For a long time, food in schools was seen as charity, but we have proven that it is an economic infrastructure." This model has had positive impacts on children's attendance and performance in schools. Data shows that students in participating schools miss fewer classes and perform better.
Njiru also highlights the participation of girls in this program, stating that over 70 percent of her staff are women. She looks confidently to the future with the goal of feeding one million children daily. She says, "We started with 25 children, and now we have reached a point where no challenge can stop us."
This award is presented by the Germany Africa Foundation, which has been awarding influential individuals from African countries who provide solutions to global issues since 1993. The German Minister for Development, Riem Alabily Radwan, will present this award to Njiru at a ceremony.
