The Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) achieved significant victories in the elections on Sunday in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the capital of Germany, Berlin, but is likely to remain in opposition.

Victory in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The AfD, with 37.9 percent of the votes, was recognized as the strongest party in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This vote surpassed the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Manuela Schwesig, the current Prime Minister, who came in second with 35.7 percent of the votes. Final results may change with the counting of votes.

Tino Chrupalla, one of the AfD leaders, told the public broadcaster ARD before the preliminary results were announced, "We clearly have a mandate to govern here," adding that the party is ready to discuss forming a coalition with other parties.

Challenges and Criticisms

The AfD also made gains in the Berlin House of Representatives elections, securing 16.2 percent of the votes, but this figure was below their initial expectations. Alice Weidel, another AfD leader, stated that her party now sees itself as the successor to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and criticized the party for its unwillingness to form a coalition with the AfD.

While the AfD continues to achieve electoral successes, the party faces serious challenges in finding political allies. In the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, the AfD narrowly missed achieving an absolute majority of seats in the state parliament and therefore cannot elect the state prime minister alone. Currently, no party is willing to form a coalition with the AfD.

Weidel also expressed that the AfD may even come to power in a minority government. She considers herself a candidate for the future prime minister and has previously run for this position. Successfully forming an AfD state government could bolster these ambitions.

However, the rising popularity of the AfD has also been accompanied by protests and criticisms. In the recent elections, many voters mobilized to prevent the AfD from gaining votes. The party faced negative headlines during its election campaigns, including a candidate who withdrew from the race due to a conviction for bank robbery and another candidate who was unable to run due to a DUI conviction.

In Berlin, drugs and Nazi memorabilia were discovered in the possession of one of the leading candidate's team members. In the past, AfD politicians have faced criticism for their positive references to the Nazi era.
