The Luxembourg government temporarily halted flights at its main airport following drone sightings in the country's skies. Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel announced on Saturday that this measure was taken to ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff.

Details of the Incident and Its Consequences

Bettel stated that the country is cooperating with its NATO allies following this incident, which comes amid growing concerns in Europe about suspicious hybrid attacks linked to Russia. The national airline Luxair reported that over 1,800 passengers have been affected, and 17 incoming flights have been redirected to other airports, including Brussels, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Flights resumed on Saturday, although Luxair warned that delays and subsequent disruptions may continue. The airport stated that this closure was a precautionary measure to protect passengers, airline crews, airport staff, and aircraft.

Analysis of the Situation and Concerns

Bettel emphasized that it is still too early to determine responsibility for this incident. In a televised press conference following an emergency meeting with defense and interior ministers, he said, "We are analyzing the situation." He also noted that larger drones have been observed in Luxembourg's skies in recent days.

Bettel added, "This is new for Luxembourg, but it is not entirely new for our neighboring countries." In the past, unauthorized drones have been spotted near sensitive sites in other parts of Europe, including Belgium, Germany, and Denmark.

He also pointed out that "we will work with our partners to ensure the safety of our populations." European governments have repeatedly warned about hybrid activities linked to Russia since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Such incidents have included suspicious sabotage, cyberattacks, and unauthorized drone flights.

Currently, there is no evidence to determine who is responsible for the drone sightings in Luxembourg.
