Mara, the leader of the Labour Party, emphasized at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool that political changes in Germany and France indicate that the European Union is not in a position to consider Britain's return "on any terms we might deem reasonable."

Political Challenges in Europe

Mara stated: "In my opinion, politics in Europe is currently really unstable. This politics faces similar challenges to those we face in Britain, including global economic instability, challenges in the Middle East, and migration crises in various parts of Europe."

The Necessity of Closer Relations

Mara, who took leadership after the Labour Party's heavy defeat in the Scottish Parliament elections in May, urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to adopt a "practical" approach to establishing closer relations with the European Union. She said: "What we need is a closer relationship because we know we have experienced the economic costs of Brexit. I want to do this on a case-by-case basis."

She also referred to some actions taken regarding the Erasmus program and other matters, stating: "This is a key issue."

Mara's remarks come amid discussions among senior Labour Party ministers about the next steps in Britain's relationship with Brussels at the party's annual gathering in Liverpool.

Andy Burnham has not yet ruled out the possibility of mentioning new conditions for reapplying for membership in the party's election manifesto, but he is expected to elaborate more on his approach in his speech to party supporters today.
