The German Ministry of Defense has announced the construction of a new seaport in Emden, located on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony. Boris Pistorius, the German Minister of Defense, stated: "Emden provides ideal conditions for quick access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic." This new port is designed to meet the growing needs of the German navy.

The Necessity of Building a New Port

The German Minister of Defense noted that ships and boats require berths, and accordingly, more service members will need housing. He added: "This will enhance the deterrent capabilities of Germany and NATO." The commercial port of Emden is recognized as the economic heart of East Frisia and provides thousands of jobs.

Features of Emden's Location

Experts believe that Emden is a suitable choice for building a new port. Johannes Peters, a maritime security expert, said: "Emden has the significant advantage of having ample space for the development of a new port." He emphasized that the new port must comply with the latest security and port protection requirements.

According to estimates, about 450 hectares of land will be needed for construction, which is equivalent to about 630 football fields. Currently, the only seaport on the North Sea coast of Germany is located in Wilhelmshaven. Peters stressed that strategically, having only one port is not logical.

Future Plans and Economic Impacts

The German Minister of Defense also pointed out the strategic advantage of having a second seaport, stating: "This makes us less predictable in emergencies and expands our operational capabilities." The new port in Emden is set to serve as a complement to the Wilhelmshaven seaport.

In addition to Emden, the port of Bremerhaven was also on the list of options, but a naval base is not planned to be built there. The German government will invest a significant amount to develop Bremerhaven as a logistics center in case of emergencies.

Despite the choice of Emden as the site for the port's construction, this matter is still in the memorandum of understanding stage between the Ministry of Defense, the state of Lower Saxony, and the city of Emden. The Minister of Defense emphasized that the construction process may take years and that significant challenges lie ahead.

The mayor of Emden, Tim Kruithof, expressed happiness about this news, considering it a unique opportunity for employment and economic development in the region.
