The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, warned his European counterparts that in the face of increasing Russian threats, they must remain calm and continue to support Ukraine. In an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he said: "We must be very cautious and understand that Russia is trying to destabilize and intimidate Europe."

Increasing Threats and the Need for Calm

In recent days, senior European officials have issued more warnings about Russia's increasing hybrid warfare. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Moscow may send drones or missiles to NATO countries supporting Ukraine in the coming months. The head of the Czech Republic's security service also emphasized that Russia may engage in "limited infiltration, fake provocations, and a massive influence campaign."

However, Stubb stated that Europe should not react excessively to these threats, as Russia's goal is to intimidate allies and reduce support for Ukraine. He said: "Whenever we react excessively to a hybrid attack, they have really won that battle."

Emphasis on Transparency and Vigilance

Stubb also referred to Germany's recent decision to hold Russia accountable for the attack on Leipzig airport, stating: "This is exactly what you should do. You need to point fingers and say, we know what you are doing and these are the consequences." He simultaneously noted the "excessive reactions" of some intelligence services that generally announce, "You are at risk of the next attack."

Stubb added: "We do not see evidence of this and we must be vigilant and awake. But we have the longest border with Russia in NATO, which is half of the border. In our intelligence, we see activities, but currently, there is no imminent military threat."

The President of Finland also expressed hope regarding a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in New York. He noted that although a peace agreement would not be reached this week, if they could establish a framework for a ceasefire in the Black Sea related to grain or energy, it could be a positive step.

Stubb mentioned the possibility of further peace negotiations in the coming weeks, including a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Zelensky at the G20 summit in Miami in December, saying: "Let's see what President Trump can do for the G20 summit."

Finally, Stubb responded to rumors that he might be the main European representative in peace negotiations with Russia, saying: "No, I don't think that is on the table right now." He described his role as a behind-the-scenes facilitator.
