Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party of Spain, recently promised that if he wins the elections on November 29, he will make significant reforms in social issues. He emphasized that he intends to rewrite the laws regarding abortion and euthanasia, with his main goal being to oust Pedro Sánchez, the current Prime Minister, from power.

Commitment to Fundamental Changes

Feijóo, in an interview with Cadena SER radio network, said: "My main goal is to remove Sánchez from the government and start a new chapter in the country." He also noted that the People's Party (PP) is leading in the polls and is ready to form a coalition with the far-right Vox party if necessary. He added: "I cannot disregard the demands of the Spanish people."

Considerations About Coalition with Vox

If the election results require a coalition, it is expected that Vox will demand the position of Deputy Prime Minister and at least one ministry. Feijóo stated that formal negotiations regarding the allocation of ministries with Vox have not yet taken place. At the same time, he pointed out that if the people want stability, he will be ready to cooperate with Vox.

Feijóo referred to the review of the abortion law that was amended in 2023, allowing individuals under 16 to have abortions without parental consent. He expressed a desire for legal guardians to have a role in this decision-making, adding: "Many 16-year-old girls who have parental support do not want to have an abortion."

Changes in Euthanasia Laws and Ministries

The leader of the People's Party also promised to restrict access to euthanasia. Spain legalized euthanasia for adults suffering from serious and incurable illnesses in 2021. Feijóo stated: "Spain should become a country where preserving life is easier."

He also mentioned the elimination of the Ministry of Equality as part of his efforts to reduce the size of government. He emphasized that this action does not mean a reduction in his commitments to feminism, stating: "I grew up in a house where there were more women than men. How can I think that a woman has fewer rights than a man?"

Feijóo did not explicitly commit to increasing the minimum wage, which has been raised eight times under Sánchez's government. He stated that his goal is to increase the "average wage" to improve people's purchasing power.
