Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, promised fundamental changes in his party's platform and decision-making processes on Monday. These statements came after another electoral defeat suffered by his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Merz called this outcome a "major turning point."

Disappointing Results and Reactions

The far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) garnered about 38 percent of the votes in Saturday's election in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, surpassing the Christian Democratic Union. This defeat marks the CDU's worst result in post-war German history and led to the party's exit from the state parliament.

In a press conference at his party headquarters in Berlin, Merz stated: "This is a dramatic and unprecedented result for the CDU... an entire state parliamentary congress has been removed from state legislation." He added, "We will feel the consequences of this for a long time."

Pressure for Leadership Change

Party officials had warned that if the CDU received less than 5 percent of the votes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, severe criticism would arise, calling for a leadership change. However, Merz is currently clinging to power.

He did mention that if he does not step down voluntarily, a leadership change could lead to early elections, while polls indicate that the far-right is the most popular party in the country. This possibility currently seems unlikely, but it may change with increasing criticism from party members.

Merz promised to create a new path for the CDU and announced that consultations would be held in the coming days to unite party members around him. He said: "We are discussing the work and structure of the party, the platform, and the public image of the CDU. To be clear, we no longer have satisfactory answers to many questions, and this is something we need to change."

Following discussions held at the CDU headquarters on Saturday evening, reports indicate that the party's state premiers secretly met in Berlin without Merz's presence. This meeting intensified speculation about their diminishing support for Merz. However, Merz emphasized on Monday that he enjoys the full support of the party leadership.
