Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, in a letter to Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, stressed the necessity of creating a unified voice from the European Union on Ukraine. She proposed this topic as part of the agenda for the upcoming informal leaders' meeting in Dublin next week and added that this issue "can no longer be postponed."
The Ukraine Crisis and Europe's Challenges
Meloni referred in this letter to the various formats that have been used to discuss Ukraine, including the Miami and Oslo meetings. She also addressed the upcoming negotiations being held by a coalition of countries willing to help and the European Political Community. She stated that these multiple forums "undermine our credibility in managing one of the most complex issues facing our countries."

While the European Union has repeatedly emphasized the importance of its presence in the peace negotiations on Ukraine, it has yet to agree on a single leader or entity to lead the negotiations. Meloni said: "I am sure we all understand that by presenting the image of a Europe that is scattered everywhere, we only serve the interests of those who want this war to continue. This is unacceptable, given that human lives and our future security are at stake."
The Need for Organization in the EU's Approaches
She also added: "Moving forward in a disjointed manner, with initiatives that chase each other and overlap, will not help us — neither with our partners nor with those we need to convince to stop this senseless aggression." Meloni emphasized that she does not want Italy to have a position in this or that format, but rather calls for a unified approach from the European Union.
European Union leaders are set to meet on November 13 in Dublin for an informal European Council meeting. Additionally, a meeting of the European Political Community, which includes all EU member states plus Ukraine and other allies, will take place the day before.
