Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of Britain, has called for Britain to be involved in shaping the future of Europe in a preface to a report published by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. In this report, he emphasized that Britain's return to the European Union should be one of the cornerstones of the British government's 10-year plan, provided that Brussels adheres to serious reforms.

Blair's call for reforms in the European Union

Blair wrote in this report: "We must be clear that we want to return to a formal relationship with the European Union. But this must be a Europe that is on a credible path for reform, a Europe of independent countries, a Europe that is capable of becoming a real global power." He also noted that if these reforms are not realized, Britain should cooperate with Europe where there are common interests, but must show that it "can and is ready to remain independent."

Emphasis on a change of approach in the Labour Party

The Tony Blair Institute's report also warns that Britain must distance itself from the old Brexit rhetoric and the red lines set out in the Labour Party's election statement for the 2024 elections. Blair has always opposed Britain's exit from the European Union and described the outcome of the 2016 referendum as "the most serious decision the country has made since World War II." In 2017, he announced that he would work as a "mission" to convince voters to change their minds about Brexit.

The new Prime Minister of Britain, Andy Burnham, promised during his tenure in July to present his vision for the next decade later this year. By emphasizing the importance of returning to the European Union, Blair shows how this path can be utilized for the benefit of Britain's national interests. He seems to believe in fundamental changes in Britain's policies and international relations and hopes that the current government will pay attention to these changes.
